The violin music of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704) pushes the virtuosity of the instrument to the extreme, and we are still as captivated as ever by the Baroque excess of his work, the genial madness of his affects and his inventiveness typical of the stylus fantasticus. This excess is reflected in his use of scordatura, or detuning of the violin, which never went so far as in the famous collection of Rosary Sonatas, also known as the Mystery Sonatas, composed around 1678.
